Stomach and Abdominal Pain
Stomach and abdominal pain are common symptoms that can arise from various conditions affecting the digestive system and other organs within the abdomen. Causes can range from benign issues such as indigestion, gas, and constipation to more serious conditions like appendicitis, gallstones, peptic ulcers, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Additionally, abdominal pain may be related to infections, hernias, kidney stones, or gynecological issues in women, such as ovarian cysts or endometriosis.
The nature of the pain—whether it is sharp, dull, cramping, or persistent—along with its location and accompanying symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever, and changes in bowel habits, can provide important clues for diagnosis. Evaluation typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scan), and endoscopy. Effective management depends on identifying the underlying cause and may include dietary modifications, medications, or surgical interventions. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to alleviate discomfort, treat the underlying condition, and prevent potential complications.
