Difficulty in Swallowing
Difficulty in swallowing, medically known as dysphagia, is a condition where an individual experiences trouble passing food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach. This can occur due to various reasons, including neurological disorders such as stroke or Parkinson’s disease, muscular issues like esophageal spasms or achalasia, and structural problems such as strictures, tumors, or inflammation in the esophagus.
Symptoms of dysphagia include pain while swallowing, the sensation of food being stuck in the throat or chest, coughing or choking during eating, and recurrent pneumonia due to aspiration of food or liquid into the lungs. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and tests like barium swallow studies, endoscopy, or esophageal manometry. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve dietary changes, swallowing therapy, medications, or surgical interventions. In severe cases, nutritional support through feeding tubes might be necessary to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration. If experiencing persistent or severe difficulty in swallowing, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
