Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy, also known as upper endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a medical procedure used to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It involves the use of a flexible tube with a light and camera at its tip, called an endoscope, which is passed through the mouth and down the throat into the digestive tract.
During gastroscopy, the physician can visually inspect the mucosal lining of these organs in real-time, looking for abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, tumors, or bleeding. The procedure allows for the collection of tissue samples (biopsies) for further examination and testing.
Gastroscopy is typically performed to investigate symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, or to screen for conditions like Barrett’s esophagus or early signs of cancer. It is a safe and effective procedure usually performed under sedation to ensure patient comfort. After gastroscopy, patients may experience mild throat discomfort and bloating, but recovery is generally quick, allowing for same-day discharge in most cases.
This procedure is valuable for diagnosing a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders and guiding appropriate treatment strategies, making it an essential tool in gastroenterology and digestive health care.
