Motility Disorder
Motility disorders refer to a group of conditions that affect the movement of the digestive tract, impairing the coordinated muscle contractions that propel food through the gastrointestinal system. These disorders can affect any part of the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and colon. Common examples include achalasia, where the esophagus fails to move food into the stomach properly; gastroparesis, characterized by delayed stomach emptying; and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can cause abnormal bowel movements and pain.
Symptoms of motility disorders vary widely but often include difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of patient history, physical examination, and specialized tests such as manometry, which measures the pressure and contractions of the gastrointestinal muscles, and imaging studies. Treatment depends on the specific disorder and may include dietary modifications, medications to enhance motility, and in some cases, surgical interventions. Effective management of motility disorders is essential to improve quality of life and prevent complications related to impaired digestive function.
