Fatty liver
Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the liver cells. It often results from factors such as obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs in individuals who drink little or no alcohol, while alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is directly related to heavy drinking.
Fatty liver is usually asymptomatic in its early stages but can progress to more severe conditions such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, or cirrhosis, leading to liver failure or liver cancer. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests, imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI, and sometimes liver biopsy. Management focuses on addressing the underlying causes through lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and abstaining from alcohol. Medications may also be prescribed to manage associated conditions like diabetes or hyperlipidemia. Early detection and intervention are crucial to prevent the progression of fatty liver disease and maintain liver health.
