    Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized medical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, pancreatic duct, and gallbladder. Combining endoscopy and fluoroscopy, ERCP allows for detailed imaging and therapeutic interventions within these ductal systems. During the procedure, an endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the duodenum, where a catheter is used to inject contrast dye into the bile and pancreatic ducts for X-ray visualization. Therapeutic actions such as stone removal, stent placement, and sphincterotomy can be performed if needed.
ERCP is typically indicated for bile duct obstructions, pancreatic duct issues, and ductal system evaluations due to conditions like gallstones, tumors, and pancreatitis. While generally safe, the procedure carries risks including pancreatitis, infections, bleeding, and perforation. Despite these risks, ERCP remains a vital tool for the effective diagnosis and treatment of complex biliary and pancreatic disorders.
