Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the inside of the colon and rectum. It involves inserting a flexible, lighted tube called a colonoscope through the anus and into the rectum and colon. This procedure allows doctors to visually inspect the lining of the colon for abnormalities such as polyps (small growths), tumors, inflammation, or signs of bleeding.
During a colonoscopy, the doctor can also perform interventions such as taking tissue samples (biopsies) or removing polyps for further examination or treatment. The procedure is typically recommended for individuals over the age of 50 as part of routine screening for colorectal cancer, as well as for diagnosing various digestive conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or evaluating symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or changes in bowel habits.
Colonoscopy is generally well-tolerated with the use of sedation to help relax patients during the procedure. It plays a crucial role in early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer by identifying precancerous lesions (such as polyps) that can be removed before they develop into cancerous growths. Following the procedure, patients are monitored for any potential complications, which are rare but can include bleeding or perforation of the colon.
Regular colonoscopy screening is essential for maintaining digestive health, particularly for individuals at higher risk due to family history of colorectal cancer, age, or other risk factors.
