Endoscopic Ultrasound
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a sophisticated medical procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain detailed images and information about the digestive tract and surrounding tissues and organs. During EUS, a flexible tube with a built-in ultrasound probe (an endoscope) is inserted through the mouth and guided through the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This allows the ultrasound probe to produce high-resolution images of the walls of the digestive tract and nearby structures, such as the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and lymph nodes.
EUS is particularly useful for diagnosing and staging cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas, evaluating chronic pancreatitis, identifying bile duct stones, and assessing submucosal lesions. Additionally, EUS can facilitate fine-needle aspiration (FNA) to obtain tissue samples for biopsy, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. The procedure is minimally invasive and typically performed under sedation, ensuring patient comfort. EUS provides critical information that guides treatment decisions, making it an invaluable tool in the management of various gastrointestinal and pancreatic conditions.
