    Endoscopic Mucosal Resection

    Endoscopic Mucosal Resection

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove abnormal or cancerous tissue from the digestive tract lining, particularly in the esophagus, stomach, or colon. It is performed using an endoscope equipped with specialized tools that allow the physician to lift and remove targeted areas of abnormal mucosa (the lining of the digestive tract) without the need for traditional surgery.
EMR is typically employed to treat early-stage cancers or precancerous conditions such as Barrett’s esophagus with high-grade dysplasia, early gastric cancer, or large colon polyps. During the procedure, the physician injects a solution beneath the abnormal tissue to raise and isolate it, then uses a snare or cutting device to remove the tissue. The removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for examination to determine if all abnormal cells have been successfully removed.
Benefits of EMR include its minimally invasive nature, which reduces recovery time and complications compared to open surgery. However, risks can include bleeding, perforation (tearing of the intestinal wall), and infection, though these are rare with experienced practitioners.
EMR plays a crucial role in both diagnosing and treating early gastrointestinal cancers and precancerous lesions, offering patients a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery while effectively managing the disease and preserving long-term digestive health.
