Blood in Stools
Blood in stools, medically known as hematochezia or melena, indicates bleeding somewhere in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Hematochezia refers to bright red blood in the stool, suggesting bleeding from the lower GI tract, such as the colon or rectum. This can result from conditions like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or colorectal cancer. Melena, characterized by black, tarry stools, indicates bleeding from the upper GI tract, such as the stomach or small intestine, and may be caused by peptic ulcers, gastritis, or esophageal varices.
The presence of blood in the stool necessitates prompt medical evaluation to determine the source and cause of the bleeding. Diagnostic approaches may include a thorough medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and endoscopic procedures like colonoscopy or upper endoscopy. Treatment varies based on the underlying cause and can range from dietary and lifestyle changes to medications and surgical interventions.
